7 Life Purpose Exercises That Actually Work (Beyond Dream Job Tests)

Life purpose exercises that work to find your dream career

Life Purpose Exercises that actually work - from journaling, meditation to coaching exercises.

If you’ve ever searched “how to find your life purpose”, you’ve probably encountered the same advice again and again: Take a personality test. Make a list of your strengths. Ask ChatGPT.

And yet, even after doing that… many people still feel lost. Especially women in their late 20s and 30s who sense that something deeper is calling them but don’t yet know what it is.

Maybe you recognize yourself in this:

  • You feel stuck in a career that looks good on paper but feels empty inside.

  • You’re experiencing career confusion and wondering if a career change might hold deeper meaning.

  • You feel a quiet pull toward a more creative job or something more aligned with your heart.

This feeling is not a failure. Very often, it’s the beginning of awakening. Because the truth is this: Your life purpose isn’t something you figure out through logic alone.

At School of Souls, I teach that your life purpose becomes clear after you reconnect with yourself first and go inwards - instead of looking outwards. The journey begins with small practices, so below are seven life purpose exercises that actually work.

Life Purpose Exercise #1: Meditation for (Career) Clarity - The Heart Answers™ Meditation

When people try to find their life purpose, they often try to think their way to an answer. But clarity rarely appears through more thinking. It appears through connecting with yourself.  That’s why meditation is one of the most powerful tools for life purpose clarity and navigating career confusion.

One technique I teach is the Heart Answers Meditation™ I developed: a guided visualization designed to help you receive answers directly from your heart.

Step 1: Start With a Heart-Opening Memory

Begin by remembering a moment that made your heart feel open. A moment of joy, love, peace, or gratitude.

Step 2: Breathe the Feeling Into Your Body

Let the feeling expand as you breathe. Activate the memory through your senses and allow the emotion to grow in your body. This openhearted state is where clarity begins to appear.

Step 3: Enter Your Inner Space to Receive Answers

From this state, imagine stepping into an inner space. It might appear as a garden, mountain, or peaceful temple. This is where your subconscious begins to communicate: often through images, emotions, or intuitive knowing.

Try the Full Heart Answers™ Meditation for Career Clarity

If you’d like to experience the full guided version, you can listen to my Heart Answers Meditation™ on Insight Timer, where I guide you through the entire process step by step.

Because when the mind becomes quiet, the heart remembers the way. The heart is your guide to dream big

Life Purpose Exercise #2: Present Moment Awareness (The Foundation of Inner Purpose)

Many people believe purpose lives somewhere in the future. But spiritual teachers like Eckhart Tolle remind us of something deeper: Your inner purpose is simply this: to be fully present. Presence reconnects you with your authentic self. And from that place, clarity begins to emerge naturally.

Simple Mindfulness Exercise for Life Purpose Clues & Self-Discovery

Pause right now and take three deep breaths.

Notice:

  • the sensation of breathing

  • the sounds around you

  • the feeling of being alive in this moment

Just one minute of presence can shift your entire state. Over time, this practice quiets the mental noise that often blocks clarity about your path.

Life Purpose Exercise #3: Journaling for Self Discovery and Career Clarity

journaling as a powerful tool for life purpose discovery

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery and finding your life purpose

Few practices are as powerful for self discovery as journaling. Writing allows you to bypass the logical mind and access deeper layers of insight. Thoughts that remain hidden in your mind often reveal themselves clearly on the page.

Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way popularized a simple but transformative practice called Morning Pages.

Morning Pages Journaling Practice for Purpose Connection

Ideally in the morning, write three pages without editing yourself. Don’t worry about grammar. Don’t try to sound intelligent, there is no write or wrong. Just write.

Over time, something beautiful happens. Your inner voice becomes clearer. Hidden desires emerge and old fears dissolve. And slowly, your authentic path begins to reveal itself.

Journaling Prompts for Finding Your Life Purpose

Try writing about these questions:

  • If money and expectations didn’t matter, how would I spend my days?

  • What kind of work would feel meaningful to me?

  • What topics or conversations energize me the most?

Life Purpose Exercise #4: Reconnect With Your Childhood Passions

One of the most powerful clues to your life purpose often lives in your past. Before the world told you what was realistic. Think back to your childhood: What fascinated you?

The “Buried Dreams” Self Discovery Exercise (based on the book The Artist’s Way)

Write down:

  • 5 hobbies that sound exciting

  • 5 classes you would love to take

  • 5 skills you wish you had

  • 5 things you loved doing as a child

  • 5 things that sound fun but slightly ridiculous

Allow yourself to be playful. Purpose is often hidden inside the things that spark curiosity and joy.

Life Purpose Exercise #5: The Wildly Improbable Goals Exercise

dreaming big is important in the process of finding your life purpose

Dreaming big is important in finding your life purpose.

Life coach Martha Beck created an exercise called Wildly Improbable Goals (WIGs). The idea is simple: Your deepest desires often feel unrealistic at first. But those dreams contain powerful clues about the direction your soul wants to go.

How to Do the Wildly Improbable Goals Exercise

  1. Write down three activities you love doing.

  2. For each activity, write one wildly improbable goal.

Examples:

Writing → publishing an international bestseller
Coaching → helping thousands of people transform their lives
Art → exhibiting work in a beautiful gallery

Choose the goal that excites and scares you the most. Then ask yourself one simple question: What is one small step I could take toward this today? Purpose unfolds through courageous micro-steps.

Life Purpose Exercise #6: Notice What Makes You Feel Alive

Your life purpose is not only about what you’re good at, it’s about what energizes you. Psychologists describe this state as flow: when you become so absorbed in an activity that time disappears. These moments are powerful signals from your inner guidance system.

One-Week Life Energy Tracking Exercise

For the next week, notice when you feel most alive. Write down:

  • What were you doing?

  • Who were you with?

  • What environment were you in?

Patterns will begin to emerge. And those patterns often reveal the direction your life wants to unfold.

Life Purpose Exercise #7: Write a Letter From Your Future Self

Visualization can unlock deep clarity. Imagine meeting yourself five years from now. This future version of you has already found a life that feels aligned, meaningful, and joyful.

Future Self Journaling Exercise

Write a letter from your future self answering these questions:

  • What path did you choose?

  • What fears did you overcome?

  • What advice do you have for me today?

This exercise bypasses the voice of doubt and reconnects you with the voice of possibility.

The Deeper Truth About Finding Your Life Purpose

Finding your life purpose isn’t about choosing the perfect career but it’s about reconnecting with yourself. At School of Souls, I call this journey entering The Land of Remembering: First you rediscover your inner magic through practices like meditation, reflection, and journaling.

Then something remarkable happens. Your outer purpose begins to reveal itself naturally: through your passions, talents, and desire to contribute to the world.

Purpose is not something you force. It’s something that unfolds.
